The NYPD has declared a portion of Flatbush a “Frozen Zone”, meaning media are not allowed in and people can be subjected to arrest for not following police orders. It basically means the area is under temporary martial law. The last times the NYPD declared a Frozen Zone was on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and during the beginning of OWS.
Please call 311 to demand that everyone in connection to tonight’s Kimani vigil/march be released from the 71st precinct in Brooklyn. There’s one Malcolm X Grassroots Movement member arrested & two Justice Committee (JC) members arrested. A ton of community members who were at the vigil/march were also arrested. If you have friends/family in NYC please tell them to call 311. If you live in NYC please call 311. Let’s get them free! Please share!

The Red Umbrella Project, a sex workers’ rights advocacy group, is sending out postcards to politicians with illustrations of interviews of sex workers’ experiences with the unfair NYC “Carrying condoms as evidence of prostitution” law. RUP director Audacia Ray sent me this text from an interview with “a 22-year-old person who identified as black, Puerto Rican, and gender non‐conforming.” I hope I did this person justice with these drawings.
Sex workers’ rights is an issue extremely close to my heart, so I was very happy to do this job. Big thanks to this person for sharing their story (not sure of their pronouns), to Dacia for the job, and to Voz for recommending me (and also for every time she gives me a good compassionate kick in the ass when I’m off-base about anything, and really everything she posts).
This is awesome and holy shit that is a fucked up clearly bullshit law (but I mean aren’t most?). Sex work needs to be decriminalized and pigs need to stop harassing people for fucking existing.
Because obviously carrying condoms in general translates to prostitution. Not only is this a huge problem for the personal safety of sex workers, but for anyone who is carrying condoms to ensure they have safe sex.
no, actually, it’s not a problem for “anyone carrying condoms.” it’s a problem for sex workers, and WoC and trans* femme people getting profiled as sex workers. cops aren’t targeting “anyone.”
